In “Character Analysis” and “Symbols, Imagery, Allegory” we discuss Roderick’s ability either to prophesize or create his own future. As he explicitly states early in the text, he feels he will die of fear. Indeed, this is what seems to do him in during the final scene, especially if you buy the interpretation that Madeline’s ghost is but a manifestation of Roderick’s terror.
