We know nothing about the priest except that he is a priest. Praskovya Fedorovna sends for him three days before Ivan's death, so he can give Ivan the last rites – confession and communion. Apparently it does make Ivan feel better: it's the priest who gives Ivan his last feeling of hope before the agony of his last three days begins.
