Although Jake Grimes and his son aren't directly responsible for Mrs. Grimes' death, their actions make it practically inevitable. They come home drunk and angry. They make her their personal servant. They abandon her during a brutal winter to go thieving. Had they treated her better, her life might not have ended like it did on a lonely winter night.
