Character Role Analysis

Tulkinghorn

Most of the bad guys in the novel are cartoonish, sort of too one-note to really be villains. Not so this guy. Powerful, secretive, immoral, unscrupulous, corrupt, and generally out for blood, Tulkinghorn is just complex enough to be truly terrifying. His unstoppable, completely relentless, and seemingly obsessive pursuit of Lady Dedlock is already scary enough, but the sadistic way he then tortures her by holding his knowledge about her past constantly over her head is pure, unadulterated evil.
