Three-Act Plot Analysis

For a three-act plot analysis, put on your screenwriter’s hat. Moviemakers know the formula well: at the end of Act One, the main character is drawn in completely to a conflict. During Act Two, she is farthest away from her goals. At the end of Act Three, the story is resolved.

Act I

We meet Equality 7-2521, who tells us about his sins against society and about how he found the tunnel where he secretly hangs out. Equality 7-2521 meets the Golden One (Liberty 5-3000) and chases after her and the Unspeakable Word. He discovers electricity.

Act II

Equality 7-2521 has an exciting interaction with Liberty 5-3000 and invents an electric light. He hen gets caught, whipped, and thrown in prison.

Act III

Equality 7-2521 enjoys the easiest escape from prison in the history of dystopian literature and has the climactic confrontation with Collective 0-0009. Then he flees the city, meets up with the Golden One, finds the house of his dreams, settles down, and discovers the glory of his own ego.
