Josef Hamacher

Character Analysis

Josef is a sharpshooter the men encounter at the Catholic Hospital. When Paul tosses a bottle to quiet the loudly praying nuns, Jospef takes blame. The men are shocked by his boldness, until they learn that he is a shooter – shooters were highly prized in the war and were "untouchable," so Josef can get away with almost anything. After a nun vehemently reproaches him for tossing a bottle, he asks if there is another bottle laying around which he can throw as well.
