The Lion and the Unicorn

Character Analysis

Characters in: Looking-Glass World

The Lion and the Unicorn are the last of the nursery rhyme characters that Alice meets in Looking-Glass World. They fight over the crown, then eat white and brown bread and plum-cake, then get drummed out of town. Their conflict shows us the futility of war: despite their hours of hand-to-hand (or paw-to-hoof) combat, neither of them can ever have the crown, which belongs to the White King.
