Foil

Character Role Analysis

Moon-Watcher

There's not a whole lot in the way of foils in the book, maybe because there's not a whole lot in the way of characterization, period. Moon-Watcher serves as a sort of foil for David Bowman, though. He's a guy (or a man-ape) with his eyes on the stars, working to evolve up the ladder, just like Bowman is. They're more comparable than contrasting, but they each highlight the way the other is part of the great story of the human race, albeit on opposite ends of time.
