Speaker: Various Villains
And I would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for you meddling kids!
Context
This line is spoken in the TV show Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! (1969-1971) by various costumed villains.
When the world feels too violent and scary, it can be nice to retreat to a simpler time, a time when the Scooby snacks were plentiful, and instead of using guns or bombs, bad guys dressed up as robots or ghosts to terrorize the local populace. And they were always foiled by a gang of teens and their loyal dog, Scooby-Doo.
And every time the Scooby gang showed up, solved the mystery, and saved the day, those darn villains would have to curse those meddling kids. Ah, those were the good old days. Scooby-dooby-doo.
Where you've heard it
You've heard this when you caught the voodoo witch doctor terrorizing your town, unmasked him, and revealed his true identity.
There's also a bluegrass band called Those Meddling Kids. Zoinks!
Pretentious Factor
If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.
It's not very pretentious to dress up like a toxic waste monster to rob a bank, but it is pretentious to think you would have gotten away with it.
