Source: "Yellow"

Speaker: Coldplay

Look at the stars, look how they shine for you.

Context

This line is from the song "Yellow" by Coldplay from the album Parachutes (2000).

Isn't that sweet? You're so special, look how the stars shine for you. Chris Martin was looking at the stars one night, wrote a love song about them, called it "Yellow" because of the Yellow Pages phonebook next to him in the studio, and made a hit song. Don't you wish things fell from the sky like that more often? Beats the heck out of slogging through a hundred re-writes.

We like Martin's expression of love more than Juliet's. Her take on Romeo and the stars is a little darker: "Take him and cut him out in little stars / and he will make the face of heaven so fine / that all the world will be in love with the night / and pay no worship to the garish sun."

No thank you. We'd rather be bathed in star shine than be the star shine.

Where you've heard it

In the evening, under a clear sky spattered with countless sparkling dots, your sweetheart says this and you swoon. Sigh.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

You probably thought we'd be nice and give this a 1 in honor of love and romance. Sorry to break it to you, but the stars shine equally for everybody, so anyone who says this to you at a dinner party is totally schmoozing.
