Speaker: Elphaba

"I'm not that girl."

Hands touch, eyes meet
Sudden silence, sudden heat
Hearts leap in a giddy whirl
He could be that boy, but I'm not that girl

Context

This line is sung by Elphaba in the song "I'm Not That Girl" from the musical Wicked (2003), written by Stephen Schwartz.

The fabulously handsome Prince Fiyero is way out of Elphaba's league, and she knows it. It's like he's the star outfielder for Oz's equivalent of the New York Mets, and she's riding the pine in the Rookie League. Plus she has green skin, like Yoda, which earns her some teasing from her peers at Shiz University, and he's dating the most popular girl at school, Galinda. Of course, Elphie resigns herself to pining away for him from a distance.

In this song, Elphaba is sad because she thinks there's no chance Fiyero will love her. Well, spoiler alert: she's kind of wrong. Yes, Elphie and Fiyero do end up together, and show that love transcends color. Even if your color happens to be green.

After they get together, Galinda (now Glinda) gets to sing her own version of "I'm Not That Girl." Love triangles are pretty terrible things, right? Just ask Betty and Veronica and Spike and Angel.

Where you've heard it

You've probably said this to yourself if you think someone is out of your league. The lower your confidence levels, the more this quote pops into your head.

Kerry Ellis, who played Elphaba in Wicked in the West End, performed a rock version of "I'm Not That Girl" with Brian May of Queen on guitar. He was probably doing astrophysics equations while strumming away.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

We've all been afraid to ask someone out that we really liked, so we'll let this one slide. Our sympathies.
