"I don't wanna grow up, I'm a Toys "R" Us kid."

I don't wanna grow up, I'm a Toys "R" Us kid. They've got a million toys at Toys "R" Us that I can play with!

Context

This line was sung by a huge cast of different kids in Toys "R" Us commercials from the 1980s to the present.

The Toys R Us kid jingle is the quintessential ode to never growing up. In its various incarnations in the 1980s, 1990s, and even into the 21st century, this song just makes you want to quit doing adult things and dig out your old Legos or Nintendo 64 or Barbie Dream House and enjoy playing for the rest of the day. It's easy to ignore the fact that the ad is trying to create a vampire-ish thirst for toys to boost that bottom line, because yay, toys!

But, hey even if it's an ad, the sentiment is still a good one and would make Peter Pan incredibly happy. Sometimes you need to take a break from the daily 9-to-5 grind, bust out an old doll, action figure, or video game and reminisce about the simpler days of the past. There's a little Toys "R" Us kid in all of us.

Where you've heard it

If you were alive some time from the mid-1980s to the early 2000s, you've heard this during commercial breaks on kid-friendly channels, like Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, and the Disney Channel. And you probably begged your parents for all the toys in the commercial.

  • However, the main Toys "R" Us office in South Africa still knows and loves the song.
  • The original writer of the Toys "R" Us kid jingle, James Patterson, is an extremely successful author best known for the Alex Cross books as well as the Women's Murder Club.
  • And here's the 1996 version of the Toys "R" Us kid ad for all the 90s kids. In a twist, the child actors from the 1982 ad are a little more grown up.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

This quote takes everyone back to the happy days of their childhood, so use it at will. But be warned, it might cause you to spend money on a teddy bear.
