Hey now!

Context

This line was first said in the thirteenth episode of The Larry Sanders Show, "Hey Now" (1992), by Hank Kingsley, played by Jeffrey Tambor.

The plot of The Larry Sanders Show focused around a fictional late-night talk show, sort of like The Tonight Show, with characters Larry (the host), Arthur (the producer), and Hank (Larry's sidekick).

As we all know, sidekicks need something that make them, well, funny. For Hank, he has a catchphrase: "Hey now!" Someone says a joke… "Hey now!" Something interesting happens… "Hey now!" An awkward silence fills the room… "Hey now!

"Hey now!" can be compared to Homer Simpson's "D'oh!" It exists as a quirky little character trait, so the phrase doesn't need to have an exact meaning. "Hey now!" can mean a lot of things; that's what makes it so funny.

Where you've heard it

People use this phrase all the time, and we'll give Hank the credit. Thanks, Hank.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Go ahead, say it all you want—no one's gonna look at you like you have two heads. Hey now!
