Source: See It Now

Speaker: Edward R. Murrow

Good night, and good luck.

Context

This line is spoken by Edward R. Murrow in the TV show See It Now (1951-1958).

Newsmen are known for their sign-offs. Walter Cronkite had "That's the way it is." Linda Ellerbee channeled Kurt Vonnegut with "And so it goes." And we don't remember what Brian Williams said, but it was probably a lie anyway.

One of the all-time sign-offs is from famed journalist Edward R. Murrow, who helmed the primetime news program See It Now, which was like the 1950s version of Dateline or 60 Minutes. See It Now was famous for its expose on Senator Joseph McCarthy, who was responsible for the communist scare. Think To Catch a Fearmonger instead of To Catch a Predator. That classic episode concluded like all the rest of them, with Murrow wishing his viewers, "Good night, and good luck."

Where you've heard it

You've heard this from the George Clooney-directed movie of the same name, which was a dramatization of this famous episode. And if any of your friends want to be news anchors, you've heard them say this line as they practice fake news broadcasts.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

There's a certain level of pretentiousness necessary to tell everyone what's newsworthy, but it's not off the charts. And hey, at the end of the day, this is just a way to sign off.
