"Ye have made it a den of thieves."

And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.

Context

This line is written by Matthew in Matthew 21:13.

This is sort of Jesus' post-beat-down one-liner after he throws all the money-changers out of the temple in Jerusalem. It was supposed to be a house of prayer, and they've made it a den of thieves. Snap.

Where you've heard it

This quote appears when someone's trying to describe a place full of crooks: a corrupt government office, a criminal hangout, Wall Street, etc.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Sounds pretty pretentious to us, unless you're talking about a cat burglar's living room.
