Speaker: Veronica Quaife

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Context

This line is spoken by Veronica Quaife (played by Geena Davis) in the movie The Fly (1986).

This gross-fest, directed by gross-fest master David Cronenberg, gives us the tale of Seth Brundle, a scientist who gets all messed up when a fly stows away in his teleportation machine. By "all messed up," we mean his DNA gets crossed with the fly's and he slowly turns into a gag-worthy fly-monster.

The quote comes from Seth's lover, Veronica, when she warns a girl with whom Seth's had a one-night stand to watch out for the Brundlefly. (For the record: we personally blame The Fly for holding back the advancement of teleportation technology by 50 years.)

Here's a link to the trailer, quote included—no need for a strong stomach.

Where you've heard it

The quotable quote's been re-quoted in recent flicks like Rio 2 and not-so-recent ones like Addams Family Values. Dr. Who has also done his best Geena Davis impression. (Okay, so he doesn't try to sound like Geena Davis, but he does take a swing at the line.) You'll find another sneaky reference to The Fly in Black Swan when feathers sprout from Natalie Portman's back, like fly-hairs from Jeff Goldblum's.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Nope, it's not pretentious, but it is a little played out—just sayin'.
