Source: Revelation 9:2

Author: St. John the Divine

"And he opened the bottomless pit."

And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.

Context

This line is written by St. John the Divine in Revelation 9:2.

At this point in John's vision of heaven and hell, he's describing a lot of bad stuff that's going to happen before Jesus' second coming. Where does that bad stuff come from? A big, bottomless pit. Stay away from that pit. It seems pretty awful.

Where you've heard it

A bottomless pit has become a metaphor for anything that swallows everything up, making it disappear without a trace. So if your mom calls you a bottomless pit after your twelfth pancake, it's not because she thinks you're some sort of demon. Probably.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

This one's a safe bet—will not trigger many pretentious alarms.
