"Adam's rib"

And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, […] and he took one of his ribs, and […] made he a woman […]

Context

This line is written by Moses in Genesis 2:21-22.

We've all heard this story: Boy is alone, God doesn't like it, God puts boy to sleep, God removes boy's rib, God creates girl, boy meets girl… Pretty self-explanatory with this one.

Where you've heard it

This quote might get whipped out during a discussion on gender equality. The idea is that God made Eve from Adam's rib (ouch!) because they were meant to stand side-by-side (awww!).

Adam's Rib is also a classic battle-of-the-sexes film from 1949 starring Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Pretentious? Depends on both your gender and the gender of the person you're talking to… So be careful with this one.
