Also, the term applies to an important date on the political calendar. Super Tuesday represents the date in the presidential primary cycle where a large number of states hold their nominating events.
Iowa and New Hampshire traditionally kick off the presidential primary season every four years. Some other states get in on the early action (most notably, South Carolina). Then...boom. A bunch of states hold their primaries on the same Tuesday. Lots of delegates up for grabs. Big implications.
The date and the precise list of states can change from cycle to cycle. However, Super Tuesday usually marks one of the key moments in any primary season.
However, it's not always decisive. Sometimes, most of the candidates have dropped out by Super Tuesday, or one of the candidates already has a commanding lead. Meanwhile, sometimes the delegates awarded on Super Tuesday get divvied up relatively evenly...meaning that not much gets decided at all.
