You get married. However, you remain very touchy and secretive about finances. You insist that you and your spouse keep separate bank accounts. You don't even let them know how much you make, and every time they try to tell any money-related information, you quickly shoosh them and say, "It's not very romantic to discuss such matters."
Of course, you also file separate returns. So, instead of filing jointly, like most married people do, you each file your own tax return, listing your personal income and all your expenses and deductions. Meanwhile, your spouse, giving you a sour look the whole time, fills out their own return...also only listing details of their own income and deductions. Sounds like you two have a good thing going.
