Continuous Operations
Categories: Company Management
Okay. Buckle up. There are two definitions for the term continuous operations. And it's important you know both of them because, uh...they'll be on the test. Probably.
The first centers on a business’ operations. Continuous operations are defined as the constant, 24/7 operational activities. So a manufacturing plant that is making products around the clock is engaged in continuous operations. It only stops when it’s time for maintenance, or if it closes its plant for any specific holiday. Whenever you see job openings for third shift, those are usually the jobs working in a continuous operations plant, burning the midnight oil. Maybe even literally.
The second definition is tied to a contingency plan for an organization in the event of a major disruption to their business operations. Let's say that a data center in Florida is hit by a hurricane. The company will deploy backup operational plans...its continuity plan...that would open an alternative center to ensure that it can continue operating without significant delays.
