Cash For Refrigerators

"Cash for Refrigerators" was an Obama-era program offering rebates to people who got rid of their old refrigerators in the name of a greener planet. It was part of a string of similar stimulus efforts aimed at getting people to buy big-ticket items. There was Cash for Clunkers, aimed at cars. There was Cash for Caulkers, aimed at appliances. Then there was the completely-lacking-in-alliteration Cash for Refrigerator program.

Generally, refrigerators made before the early nineties really hogged up electricity. The program encouraged people to upgrade to a newer model and reduce their electricity consumption. Utility companies offered a $50 credit on your bill if a customer upgraded.

This program fizzled out, similar to Cash for Caulkers, because the $50 rebate wasn't really sufficient to drive purchases of a new fridge.
