Borderline Risk (Insurance)
Categories: Insurance
Fortunately, there are now rules in place so that someone with pre-existing health conditions can’t be categorized as a borderline risk and be denied health insurance coverage. Well...for now, at least. By the time you read this, it could be every man, woman, child, and cat for themselves.
Until 2014, an insurance company could label you as "risky" based on your past health history. If you had cancer, asthma, high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, or any conditions that have a good chance of being chronic or reoccurring, they could refuse to insure you, or you would be charged a higher premium.
Even those with no history of health issues could be denied if genetic diseases such as ALS, early-onset Alzheimer’s, or breast cancer run in the family. Babies born with a heart condition, for example, were considered a borderline risk right out of the womb. The new regulations came into effect with the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare, aka the Might Be On Its Way Out Act.
