Common Core Standards
Writing, Kindergarten
Just like kindergartners, writing comes in all shapes and sizes. So even the youngest students can get a taste of what can be done with the written word.
But we're not just hoping for the best when it comes to 'q's and searching for some semblance of a subject in a sentence. These standards cover everything from opinion pieces, to narratives, to informational texts. And kindergartners will be encouraged to collaborate, engage, and even dabble in some newfangled digital tools.
If that all sounds like we're nearing a pilot of Are You Smarter than a Kindergartner?, have no fear. These standards include drawing and dictating to supplement the writing process, so not only will you get to hear their cheery voices, but their parents will get some lol-worthy crayon art to post on social media. They may not be ready to compose epics in blank verse, or even much more than a half-coherent paragraph, but these standards will walk them through the basics of what it means to be a writer.
